From DXB to the part of Dubai you actually booked.
Deira, Downtown Dubai and Dubai Marina call for different last-mile plans, even though the Red Line serves all three broad areas. Start with your arrival terminal, your hotel address and the time you land. This guide helps you choose between metro, taxi, bus and a booked car without mistaking the nearest station for the hotel door.
THE SHORT VERSION
The Red Line has stations at both terminals and runs toward Deira, Downtown and Marina.
There is no metro station inside Terminal 2. Check an RTA bus connection or take a taxi.
Official taxi ranks operate at all three terminals, including when the metro is closed.
DXB means Dubai International Airport. DWC is a different airport. Check your ticket and hotel address before choosing a route.
First, identify your DXB terminal and exact destination
Dubai International has three passenger terminals. The useful distinction for an arriving traveller is that Terminals 1 and 3 connect directly to the Dubai Metro Red Line, while Terminal 2 does not have a metro station in the terminal. Dubai Airports lists airport buses from the arrivals areas of all three terminals and official taxis at each one. That makes your terminal the first decision point, before comparing fares or journey times.
Next, open your hotel confirmation and look beyond the district name. “Downtown Dubai” can mean a hotel by Dubai Mall, Business Bay or another address that involves a further walk or ride. “Dubai Marina” stretches along both sides of the water and overlaps in travellers’ minds with Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR) and Jumeirah Lakes Towers (JLT). In Deira, the hotel could be near the Red Line at City Centre Deira or Al Rigga, or closer to the Green Line and the Creek. The station nearest the district label is not necessarily the station nearest your entrance.
If you are arriving with several cases, children, or someone who cannot manage a station walk, a direct vehicle may be worth more than the fare difference. If you have light luggage and your address is near a station, the metro can be an efficient way to avoid road congestion. Neither mode includes immigration, baggage claim and the time needed to get from arrivals to its boarding point.
Metro, taxi, bus or private transfer?
| Option | Where it works | Best reason to choose it | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Red Line metro | Direct from Terminals 1 and 3 | Predictable rail route to stations in all three areas | Service hours, luggage policy and the final walk |
| Official airport taxi | Ranks at Terminals 1, 2 and 3 | Direct to the hotel and available around the clock | Metered total, road traffic and the correct pickup rank |
| RTA public bus | Arrivals stands at all three terminals | Can serve a useful stop when the route matches your address | Route-specific timetable, changes and luggage handling |
| Pre-booked transfer | Arrange a terminal-specific pickup | Known meeting instructions and vehicle size | Waiting-time terms and what the quote includes |
For most visitors landing at Terminal 1 or 3 during operating hours, compare the Red Line with a taxi. From Terminal 2, start with a taxi unless an RTA bus route clearly fits your destination and schedule. A private transfer is useful when you need a larger vehicle or want a prearranged meeting point. It still travels on the same roads as a taxi, so a booking does not eliminate congestion.
How to leave each terminal
Terminal 1 and Terminal 3: follow the Red Line signs
After clearing arrivals, follow signs to the Airport Terminal 1 or Airport Terminal 3 metro station. Buy or top up a nol card or ticket at the station before passing the gates. The airport says Red Line passes are available at ticket offices and machines in both terminals. Board a citybound Red Line train and check the electronic platform display, as service patterns can change. The RTA’s current station map places both airport stations before City Centre Deira and Al Rigga, with Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall, Sobha Realty and DMCC farther along the line.
Do not assume an airport train operates all night. Dubai Airports and the RTA list regular metro station hours as Monday–Thursday 05:00–midnight, Friday 05:00–01:00 the next day, Saturday 05:00–midnight and Sunday 08:00–midnight. These are network opening hours, not a promise that the last train to your station leaves at closing time. Holiday schedules can differ. Check the live RTA timetable when your flight lands near the first or last service.

Terminal 2: do not plan to walk to the airport metro
Terminal 2 is separate from the two terminals with airport metro stations. Dubai Airports’ metro guidance names Terminals 1 and 3 for direct Red Line access, while its bus guidance says buses serve arrivals at Terminal 2 as well. For a budget journey, check the RTA journey planner for a bus from your actual Terminal 2 stop and the necessary onward metro connection. Do not rely on a route number copied from an old article: stop locations and services can change.
For a first visit, late arrival, or substantial luggage, the official taxi rank outside Terminal 2 is the easier default. Taking a taxi from Terminal 2 to a metro station solely to start a long rail journey may save little once the first fare and transfer time are counted. Compare the whole door-to-door journey, not only the metro ticket.
Which route fits your Dubai neighbourhood?
DXB to Deira
Deira is the shortest of these three broad journeys by geography, but it is not one single stop. On the Red Line from Terminals 1 or 3, City Centre Deira and Al Rigga are useful for hotels near those stations. Union is the interchange with the Green Line, which serves other parts of Deira, including Baniyas Square and Gold Souq. Check your hotel pin against the RTA station map before you decide where to leave the train.
If your hotel is by the Creek or the souks, it may be quicker to change at Union for the Green Line than to walk from a Red Line station, but the correct stop depends on the street address. A short taxi from a convenient metro station is another option. If a taxi takes you all the way from DXB, show the driver the hotel name and map pin: “Deira” alone leaves too much room for a detour or a wrong branch of the district.
An RTA bus may stop closer to your hotel, particularly around the airport-facing part of Deira. Check the live route and its last departure instead of assuming all airport buses go through the neighbourhood you need. A taxi is especially practical for a midnight arrival, when the metro may be closed and you may not want an unfamiliar bus change after a flight.

DXB to Downtown Dubai
For Dubai Mall and nearby addresses, take the Red Line from Terminal 1 or 3 to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station. Visit Dubai and Dubai Mall both confirm the station’s pedestrian bridge connection to the mall. It is an indoor link, but it is still a substantial final walk with luggage. A hotel near the fountain, at a different entrance to the mall, or farther along the boulevard may require additional walking or a short onward ride.
Some hotels marketed as Downtown are better reached from Business Bay or another stop. Open the address on a map and compare the station exit and walking route, rather than using Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall for every Downtown booking. If the last leg looks awkward with bags, take a taxi from the airport or finish the rail trip with a short local taxi. The road option is direct but its duration can vary noticeably with traffic.
For an evening visit to the mall rather than hotel check-in, the metro is often a simple choice. For a hotel transfer, the question is whether the station-to-reception walk is reasonable in the heat and with your luggage. Dubai Mall’s own transport page describes the link bridge and its taxi areas; use the hotel’s entrance instructions for the final approach.

DXB to Dubai Marina
The Red Line runs from the airport terminals toward Sobha Realty and DMCC, the two metro stations most useful for Dubai Marina. You do not need to change trains simply to reach these stations from Terminal 1 or 3. Check the destination board before boarding, then check your hotel pin against both stops. The Marina is long enough that choosing the wrong one can turn a convenient rail ride into an inconvenient walk.
Dubai’s tourism authority notes that both stations connect with the Dubai Tram, which circles the Marina and serves places such as Marina Mall and JBR. The tram can solve a last-mile problem, but it adds a change and is not an extension of the metro timetable. Check its operating hours and the precise tram stop near your hotel. If you are headed to JBR or The Beach, do not assume that arriving at a Marina metro station means you are already at the seafront.
A taxi from DXB is the simplest single-vehicle journey to a Marina hotel, particularly after metro hours or when several people share the fare. It is also the longest of these three broad airport road trips, so allow for traffic. A pre-booked car may help with a group or oversized baggage, provided the pickup instructions specify the correct terminal and meeting area.

Buying a nol ticket and travelling with bags
Dubai’s nol system covers the metro, public buses and tram. Buy a suitable card or ticket at an airport metro station or other authorised point, keep enough stored value for your route, and tap in and out as required. The RTA calculates public transport fares by the zones travelled and publishes current products and fares. A Silver card can make sense if you will use public transport repeatedly; a Red Ticket may suit a short visit. Check the current RTA nol fares rather than treating a dollar conversion in an older guide as a live price.
The RTA’s luggage policy allows one large and one small suitcase per passenger, within the dimensions shown on its metro guidance, and requires luggage to be placed in the designated areas. Dubai Airports summarises this as two pieces including hand luggage. If your baggage exceeds the permitted size or you cannot lift and manoeuvre it safely, choose a vehicle that accommodates it. A family of four with several large cases may find an ordinary taxi too small; check vehicle capacity before joining the rank or booking a transfer.
Metro platforms and trains can be busy. Keep bags close without blocking doors, wheelchair spaces or aisles. Allow extra time for ticketing, station lifts and the final walk. For a bus, have your nol card ready before boarding: Dubai Airports states that cash is not accepted for RTA bus travel.

Taking an airport taxi or booked car
Dubai Airports says Dubai Taxi Company taxis are available 24/7 at designated ranks in each DXB terminal. After arrivals, follow the official taxi signs rather than accepting an unsolicited ride in the hall. Show the driver the hotel address and map pin, and confirm the terminal pickup if you booked a ride through an app. Airport taxis have an airport starting fare plus distance-based charges; the final metered total can also reflect route and traffic. Check the airport’s taxi page for the current starting fare and ride-hailing instructions.
Ride-hailing pickups have their own signed points. A pre-booked transfer may include a meet-and-greet, but “airport pickup” is not enough detail: give the provider the flight number, arrival terminal, hotel address, number of passengers and luggage, and ask how long the driver waits after landing. Confirm whether the quoted total includes road tolls, parking, waiting time and child seats where needed. If the flight is late, the provider’s waiting policy matters more than a promised drive time.
For a fair comparison, calculate the full cost for your group. Metro is usually attractive for one or two travellers with manageable bags and a station-side hotel. A taxi or transfer becomes more competitive when its total is divided among several passengers and eliminates a lengthy last-mile ride. All three destinations are reachable by taxi, but the traffic exposure grows as you travel farther from DXB.

What to do if you arrive late or your flight is delayed
Use the time you expect to leave arrivals, rather than the scheduled landing time, when checking public transport. Passport control, baggage delivery and walking through a large terminal can make the difference between catching a final train and missing it. The RTA’s published network hours are a starting point; check the actual last useful departure and any special-event schedule before committing to rail.
If the metro has closed, an official taxi remains available at the airport. Some buses may run later, but the right service depends on terminal and destination. Verify a specific bus in the RTA planner before waiting at a stand. If you have booked a car, tell the provider about a delay as soon as possible and review the waiting-time rules. Do not abandon a confirmed pickup without contacting the provider if its policy could charge you.
One simple arrival plan is to save the hotel’s English address, a map pin, and a screenshot of the booking before takeoff. After landing, check your actual terminal, public transport status and traffic. If the rail option is still running and the last leg is easy, take it. Otherwise, follow the airport’s official taxi or pre-booked pickup signs.
Choose the route that reaches your hotel, not just your district
Deira: start by checking City Centre Deira, Al Rigga and, for the Creek and souks, the Green Line via Union. Downtown: Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall is a useful rail stop, but include the footbridge and the walk to reception. Dubai Marina: compare Sobha Realty and DMCC, then decide whether a tram or short taxi is needed. At Terminal 2 or outside metro hours, a taxi is the simplest baseline for all three.
If you have not chosen a hotel yet, location can save more effort than a minor difference in airport transfer fare. Use the address and nearest practical station when comparing properties; the HAMINTOUR Dubai hotel guide can help narrow down neighbourhoods, while the transport checks here help you plan the arrival.

Frequently asked questions
Short answers to the questions travellers most often face after landing at DXB.
Can I take the metro directly from Dubai Airport to Dubai Marina?
Yes, from DXB Terminal 1 or 3 you can use the Red Line to Sobha Realty or DMCC, the two main metro stops serving Dubai Marina. Check your hotel’s exact address; you may still need the tram, a walk or a short taxi for the final leg. Terminal 2 has no metro station in the terminal.
Which metro station should I use for Downtown Dubai?
Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall is the usual station for Dubai Mall and nearby addresses, with a pedestrian bridge to the mall. Some Downtown hotels are closer to Business Bay or another stop, so compare the station exit with your hotel pin before travelling.
Is there a metro station at DXB Terminal 2?
No. Dubai Airports lists direct Red Line stations at Terminals 1 and 3. From Terminal 2, check a suitable RTA bus connection or take an official airport taxi from the designated rank.
Does the Dubai Metro run all night from the airport?
No. Regular station hours vary by day and special schedules may apply. Check the RTA timetable for the last useful train from your airport terminal, especially if your flight arrives close to midnight or early on Sunday.
Do I need cash for the airport bus or metro?
Use a suitable nol card or ticket for RTA public transport. Dubai Airports says cash is not accepted on RTA buses. Airport metro stations have ticket offices or machines; check current RTA fare products and top-up rules before travel.
Is a taxi better than the metro after a late flight?
An official airport taxi is the simpler option when the metro is closed, your hotel is far from a station or you have difficult luggage. Taxi ranks operate around the clock at all three DXB terminals. If the metro is running and your hotel is near a station, compare both door-to-door journeys.
