From Dubai International Airport (DXB), the lowest-cost public route to Abu Dhabi city is the Dubai Metro to Ibn Battuta followed by the E101 intercity bus. A taxi or booked car takes you directly to your address. If your destination is Zayed International Airport (AUH), Yas Island or Saadiyat, choose the route with that final stop in mind.
Compare your options
“Dubai Airport to Abu Dhabi” can mean four very different journeys: a hotel in the city, a resort on Yas Island, a stay on Saadiyat Island, or a connecting flight from AUH. The cheapest route to the city’s bus station is not automatically the best route to each of those places. This guide starts with the destination you actually need and follows the trip all the way from your DXB terminal to the last leg.
Which option should you choose?
| Option | Best for | Indicative cost | Transfers before Abu Dhabi | Where you finish |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Metro + E101 | Lowest-cost city trip; manageable luggage | About US$9 per adult for the metro and intercity bus with a regular Silver nol fare; new card and hotel leg extra | One at Ibn Battuta; possibly another to reach the hotel | Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station, not your hotel |
| Taxi to Ibn Battuta + E101 | Terminal 2, late metro disruption, or cumbersome bags while keeping bus savings | About US$7 bus fare plus the metered Dubai taxi fare and Abu Dhabi final leg | One at Ibn Battuta; possibly another at the central station | Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station |
| Official airport taxi | Direct travel, groups, late arrival, distant hotel | Metered; obtain a live estimate. Airport flag fall is about US$7, before distance, waiting and applicable tolls | None | Your chosen Abu Dhabi address |
| Pre-booked private car | Known pickup, child-seat or vehicle-size needs, written all-in quote | Operator quote; compare its total in US dollars, including waiting and tolls | None | Your chosen Abu Dhabi address |
| Eligible Emirates coach | Travellers whose Emirates flight booking includes the Abu Dhabi coach | Included only when eligible and correctly booked | Coach from DXB Terminal 3, then a local ride | Emirates’ Abu Dhabi city stop, not a hotel |
These dollar figures are approximate conversions of the operators’ local fares, using the UAE dirham’s US dollar peg; payment is normally charged in local currency. The metro-plus-bus figure combines the RTA’s more-than-two-zone Silver fare (about US$2) with Abu Dhabi Mobility’s inter-emirate fare (about US$7). Your exact metro tier and ticket choice should be checked at the machine. No fixed official DXB-to-Abu-Dhabi taxi total exists because the meter depends on the endpoint and road conditions.

How to take the metro and E101 bus from DXB
- Leave arrivals at Terminal 1 or 3. Follow the airport’s Metro signs to the Red Line station attached to your terminal. Dubai Airports confirms stations at T1 and T3; there is no equivalent station at T2.
- Buy or top up a nol card. Ticket counters and machines are at the metro stations. RTA says a nol card needs sufficient balance before the gate; a minimum balance applies. Keep enough for the intercity leg, or use the separate RTA E101 eTicket booking option.
- Take the Red Line toward Ibn Battuta. Check the platform display for a train continuing toward Life Pharmacy/UAE Exchange, the branch serving Ibn Battuta. RTA says the two Red Line branches now run directly from the centrepoint side; an Expo-bound train does not go to Ibn Battuta. If you board the wrong branch, follow station staff’s instructions to correct your route.
- Walk to Ibn Battuta Bus Station. Follow signs from Ibn Battuta Metro Station to the adjacent bus station. Confirm that the departure board and bay say E101 — Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station. The RTA station map identifies the E101 service and bay, but check signs on the day in case the bay changes.
- Ride to Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station. This is the city terminal. Collect checked luggage before leaving the platform and continue by Abu Dhabi taxi, local bus or a manageable walk to your actual address.
RTA offers dated, timed online seat booking for E101, as well as station purchase. If your plane could be delayed, read the ticket’s change and refund terms before committing to a tight departure. Allow time for immigration, baggage claim, buying a card, the metro ride and the walk to the bus bay. A bus ticket does not shorten those steps.
The Red Line usually operates from early morning until around midnight, with a later Friday close and a later Sunday start; Dubai Airports publishes the day-by-day hours. Holiday hours can change. Check the RTA live timetable for your landing day and for the final train you can realistically catch after clearing arrivals. Dubai Airports says metro travellers may carry up to two pieces of luggage including hand luggage; check the linked RTA conditions if yours are unusually large.

What about E100 or E102?
E100 also reaches Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station, but it leaves Dubai from Al Ghubaiba. From the T1/T3 Red Line, reaching Al Ghubaiba normally means changing to the Green Line at Union or BurJuman, so E101 is the simpler airport-to-city route for most travellers. E100 can still suit someone already near Old Dubai or a traveller who is routed to Al Ghubaiba. RTA’s eTicket page lists both E100 and E101 city services.
E102 is a different journey. RTA’s route timetable shows a stop at Zayed International Airport Terminal A and an onward journey to Mussafah; the Ibn Battuta station map also identifies E102. This can matter if you are going to AUH airport, but it is not the E101 ride into central Abu Dhabi. Check its exact departure point, operating day and stop sequence in the live RTA planner before choosing it for a flight connection.
If you arrive at DXB Terminal 2
Terminal 2 has no direct Dubai Metro station. Your practical public-transport choice is to reach a Red Line station or Ibn Battuta Bus Station by a separate road trip, then continue on E101. For a traveller with luggage, an official taxi from T2 to Ibn Battuta is the simplest mixed-mode plan; ask for the destination Ibn Battuta Bus Station, not the mall entrance. A cheaper city-bus connection may exist for your arrival time, but it can require extra changes and longer luggage handling; plan it from the actual terminal in the RTA journey planner rather than assuming T1/T3 directions apply.
If you land after metro hours, do not automatically pay for a taxi to Ibn Battuta and expect an immediate E101. Confirm the bus departure first. Compare the combined taxi-to-bus and bus-to-hotel cost with a direct DXB-to-hotel taxi or a pre-booked car. This is especially useful for several passengers: the bus fare is per person, while a regular taxi quote is for the vehicle within its legal seating and luggage limits.

Taxi, ride-hailing or a private transfer
Dubai Airports says official Dubai Taxi Company ranks operate around the clock at every DXB terminal. Follow the Taxi signs after arrivals and tell the driver your exact hotel, building entrance or AUH terminal. The airport page gives a starting fare equivalent to about US$7, with distance added. The RTA tariff also accounts for waiting time and applicable road tolls; its flag-fall table distinguishes vehicle types. Ask the rank attendant for the right vehicle if your party has bulky luggage, a wheelchair or an infant who needs a child seat.
Do not treat the airport flag fall as the intercity fare. The full meter runs through the Dubai-to-Abu-Dhabi journey, and a city hotel, Yas Island, Saadiyat resort and AUH have different distances. Before leaving, compare a current app estimate for your precise destination with a written private-car quote. Dubai Airports lists Uber, Careem and Bolt as ride-hailing options and directs passengers to their marked pickup points; app products, prices and pickup rules can differ from the official taxi queue.
A pre-booked car is useful when you need a fixed meeting point after immigration, a larger vehicle, a documented child-seat arrangement or a quoted total. Request the final price including airport waiting, parking, tolls, luggage, additional stops, night arrival and tax. Give the operator your flight number, terminal and a reachable phone number, then confirm how long the driver waits after the actual landing. An advertised “Dubai to Abu Dhabi” fare may start in central Dubai rather than DXB or end at Abu Dhabi city rather than your resort, so check both addresses in writing.
Can you use an airline coach from DXB?
Only if your flight booking qualifies. Emirates’ Abu Dhabi coach serves eligible Economy and Premium Economy travellers with an Emirates-issued flight ticket and an included coach booking. Emirates says it must normally be reserved at least 48 hours ahead and gives the pickup at DXB Terminal 3 arrivals, opposite Exit 3. Its Abu Dhabi stop is the Emirates downtown office area in Khalidiya/Corniche, so you still need to reach your hotel. A traveller who simply lands on a different airline cannot treat this as a free public airport bus.
Etihad’s shuttle serves eligible Etihad travellers connected with AUH, but its Dubai pickup is Al Wasl Centre, not DXB arrivals. Do not plan to step off a flight at DXB directly onto an Etihad coach. If you hold an Emirates or Etihad itinerary that includes a coach segment, follow the details on your ticket; they take priority over a generic bus-search result.
Where do you go after the intercity bus?
Central Abu Dhabi and the Corniche
E101 and E100 arrive at Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station, near Al Wahda, rather than at the Corniche waterfront or a hotel entrance. Check the exact walking distance in a map before deciding to walk with bags in the heat. A local Abu Dhabi taxi is straightforward; Experience Abu Dhabi explains taxi options. A local bus can be cheaper but needs a Hafilat card and a suitable stop near the hotel. Your Dubai nol card and an Abu Dhabi Hafilat card serve different local networks.

Yas Island hotels and attractions
Yas Island is a separate destination from central Abu Dhabi. A direct road transfer can be substantially simpler than taking E101 into the central station and then travelling back toward Yas. If you prefer public transport, check the live local bus journey and whether your hotel provides a shuttle; do not assume the Yas Express or a hotel vehicle will collect you at Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station. For a short stay, compare the full door-to-door cost and time, not just the low E101 fare. A taxi from the central station adds another paid leg.

Saadiyat Island resorts and museums
Saadiyat covers a broad area, so “Saadiyat Island” is not a complete drop-off address. Give the driver or route planner the specific hotel, museum or beach entrance. From the central bus station you may need a separate local bus and walk, or a taxi. Families with bags, a beach resort booking or limited time should compare that extra leg with a direct car from DXB. A low bus ticket price can be poor value if the last connection is inconvenient.

Zayed International Airport (AUH)
If you are changing airports for another flight, do not book E101 assuming it drops at AUH. RTA’s E102 timetable includes Zayed International Airport Terminal A; verify its actual Dubai boarding point and timetable before travel. A direct taxi or pre-booked car is the simpler door-to-door alternative, particularly if your connection is time-sensitive. If you have already reached Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station, you need a separate airport-bound bus or taxi; Experience Abu Dhabi identifies the A1 airport service, but check its current stop and time before relying on it.
DXB and AUH are different airports in different emirates. Collect any checked bag, pass the entry and exit formalities required for your itinerary, and leave a generous buffer for road traffic and airport check-in/security. No public bus or road transfer can guarantee a short self-connection. Confirm visa or entry eligibility with the UAE Government visa guidance and your airline if you are on separate tickets.

How long does it take, and what will you actually pay?
Plan door to door, not from the bus departure alone. The public journey has airport exit, metro, station walk, bus wait, intercity ride and a hotel leg. A practical planning allowance to central Abu Dhabi is roughly three to four hours after you clear DXB arrivals, and longer if a connection is missed or traffic is heavy. That is an editorial planning estimate, not an operator promise. A direct car avoids the changes, but road travel still varies greatly with congestion and the Abu Dhabi endpoint. Check a live route estimate when you land; do not build a tight flight connection around a best-case road time.
For a solo traveller using T1 or T3, the published intercity fare converts to about US$7 and a long Silver-card Dubai Metro trip is about US$2. This makes the main public legs about US$9, before a new nol card, local Abu Dhabi transport and any optional seat booking terms. If you need a new Dubai Silver nol card, its purchase price includes stored value; do not confuse the upfront card payment with an extra full travel fare. Abu Dhabi’s anonymous Hafilat card costs about US$3 before local bus travel. Local Hafilat fares depend on distance. All dollar amounts here are rounded guidance; operators charge in the UAE’s currency and payment-provider conversion fees may differ.
For two or more people, compare the whole party’s bus-and-final-taxi total against one legal-capacity taxi or private car. Get quotes for the same destination, vehicle size and luggage load. If the bus arrives after a local service ends, the final taxi is not optional. If you are travelling to Yas, Saadiyat or AUH, the extra leg from central Abu Dhabi can change the value calculation completely.
Before you leave DXB: a short checklist
- Confirm the airport code and terminal. This guide starts at DXB. Dubai World Central/Al Maktoum International (DWC) has a different access route; Dubai Airports lists its N55 link to Ibn Battuta.
- Enter the precise final address. Abu Dhabi city, Yas Island, Saadiyat and AUH need different last legs. Save the hotel pin, not only its name.
- Check today’s trains and buses. RTA times can change on holidays or during disruption. Use the RTA timetable and E101 booking page before buying a timed ticket.
- Think about the bags and people. Two small bags on a metro are very different from a stroller, four suitcases and a tired child. Ask for the right taxi vehicle or a confirmed child seat if needed.
- Keep an independent connection buffer. Road traffic, immigration and baggage claim are outside the control of your bus or driver. For a separate AUH flight, follow the airline’s check-in deadline and allow substantial additional time.
If your wider itinerary also includes Dubai neighbourhoods, our DXB to Deira, Downtown and Marina guide covers the local leg. If you are travelling the opposite way, see the AUH to Dubai options. Explore more practical routes in hamintour travel guides.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a direct public bus from DXB arrivals to Abu Dhabi city?
The standard RTA E101 city bus starts at Ibn Battuta Bus Station, not at the DXB terminal. From DXB Terminal 1 or 3, use the Red Line to Ibn Battuta; from Terminal 2, plan a separate connection. Eligible Emirates travellers may have a separately booked airline coach from T3.
Does E101 stop at Zayed International Airport?
No. E101 is the Ibn Battuta–Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station city service. Check RTA’s E102 route if AUH Terminal A is your destination, or arrange a direct car.
Can I pay the whole journey with a Dubai nol card?
A nol card is used for Dubai Metro and RTA intercity travel, subject to the ticket you buy. Abu Dhabi’s local bus network uses Hafilat, so you will need a separate card for that final local bus leg. A taxi is paid separately.
Can I take E101 with luggage?
Travellers do take bags on the route, but the Dubai Metro has a stated limit of two pieces including hand luggage. If your baggage is oversized, fragile or hard to move between stations, check current operator rules and consider a road transfer.
Is the Emirates airport coach open to everyone?
No. Emirates ties its coach to an eligible Emirates flight ticket and advance booking. Check the bus segment in your own itinerary before relying on it.
What is the cheapest route for a group?
For one person, metro plus E101 is usually the lowest published main-leg fare. For a group, add every person’s bus fare, any taxi to or from a station, and the final hotel trip, then compare with one correctly sized direct vehicle. The answer depends on your party and destination.
What if my flight arrives after the last metro?
Check the next E101 departure before committing to a taxi ride to Ibn Battuta. If waiting for the next public connection is impractical, take an official DXB taxi or a pre-booked car to your final address.
Will the bus take me to my hotel on Yas or Saadiyat?
No. E101 ends at Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station. Your hotel, Yas Island and Saadiyat require a separate onward trip; compare that total with a direct car from DXB.
