Dubai Airport to Ras Al Khaimah: Bus or Taxi?

hamintour travel guides · UAE airport transfers
The practical route from DXB to Ras Al Khaimah

Take the metro from Terminal 1 or 3 to Union, then a Ras Al Khaimah Transport Authority bus, if saving money matters most. Take a licensed airport taxi or an agreed hotel transfer if you want to reach your actual hotel without changing vehicles. The bus goes to Ras Al Khaimah’s main station, not to the beach resorts.

Compare your options · Follow the bus route · Plan the last mile

The choice is less about “bus versus taxi” than about where in Ras Al Khaimah you are staying. A traveler bound for a hotel in the city can make good use of the intercity bus. Someone heading straight to Al Hamra or Al Marjan Island still needs a separate ride after the bus. At hamintour travel guides, we would choose the route only after checking the terminal, landing time, luggage and hotel address together.

First, check your airport code. This guide starts at Dubai International Airport (DXB), including Terminals 1, 2 and 3. Dubai’s other airport, Al Maktoum International (DWC), is in a different part of the emirate and needs a different route.

How to take the bus from Dubai Airport to Ras Al Khaimah

There is no reason to assume that the intercity bus starts at your airport terminal. The reliable public-transport plan is to get to Union Bus Station in Dubai, then board the Ras Al Khaimah Transport Authority (RAKTA) service to RAK. On its official intercity timetable, RAKTA lists Dubai Union–RAK departures daily from 07:30 to 23:30, including some trips labelled direct and others via Umm Al Quwain. A direct-labelled trip is still not a hotel drop-off.

Step 1: reach Union from your terminal

Terminal 1 or 3: follow the signs to the Dubai Metro Red Line. Both terminals have stations. Ride towards the city and get off at Union, where Red and Green lines meet. Check the platform direction before entering; the Red Line has services in both directions. The airport’s metro guidance and the RTA journey planner are the sensible checks for the day’s service, especially after an evening arrival.

Terminal 2: do not look for a metro platform in the terminal. Its ground-transport setup differs from Terminals 1 and 3. Use the RTA planner for the available bus/metro combination, or take a short licensed taxi to Union if that is simpler with bags. That taxi is an extra cost, so compare the whole journey rather than the intercity ticket alone.

Buy or top up the appropriate nol card for Dubai transport. The RTA’s published Silver-class fare bands are AED 3 (about US$0.82), AED 5 (about US$1.36) or AED 7.50 (about US$2.04), depending on zones travelled. We do not give a single DXB–Union fare because your terminal, route and ticket type determine the charged amount. Keep the nol card distinct from the RAKTA intercity ticket.

Step 2: find the RAKTA departure at Union

Once at Union, follow the bus-station signs and confirm the bay, destination and next departure with the displayed information or staff. Union is a large interchange; allow time to walk from the metro to the correct stand. The English RAKTA timetable shows 19 Dubai-to-RAK trips between 07:30 and 23:30, with most departures about an hour apart and two additional evening departures. Check the current booking display before assuming a particular bus will run or stop exactly as a static list suggests.

The published English fare is AED 30 (about US$8.17). The Arabic version of RAKTA’s transport page displays AED 20 (about US$5.45) for the same direction. Because the operator’s own pages conflict, treat neither amount as a guaranteed checkout price. Verify the fare in the Sayr app described in RAKTA’s Sayr information or at the counter before committing to the route.

Step 3: finish the journey in RAK

Confirm where the bus terminates before setting out. The intercity arrival point is the main bus station in the South Al Dhait area, not a doorstep stop at every hotel. Save your hotel’s full name and map pin offline, then arrange a local taxi or a hotel pickup from the station. RAKTA’s local taxi tariff lists an AED 4 (about US$1.09) daytime flagfall or AED 5 (about US$1.36) at night, AED 1.83/km (about US$0.50/km), and an AED 2 (about US$0.54) service fee. Your actual last-mile fare depends on the destination and meter.

For a city hotel, the extra ride may be modest. For Al Hamra or Al Marjan Island, it is a meaningful extra leg and should be part of your budget. RAKTA also describes an Orange city-bus route from the main station towards Al Nakheel. It is useful only when its stops, hours and your hotel line up; it is not a blanket substitute for a resort transfer.

What will the full bus journey cost?

Think in three tickets: DXB to Union + Union to RAK + RAK station to hotel. The metro’s published Silver fare bands start at AED 3 (about US$0.82); the English RAKTA page shows AED 30 (about US$8.17) for the intercity leg, subject to the official language-version discrepancy above; the local taxi has its own starting charge and distance rate. A Terminal 2 taxi to Union is a fourth component. That makes a precise “airport to any hotel” bus price impossible without the terminal and hotel address.

For a rough comparison, a Terminal 1 or 3 traveler using an AED 3–7.50 metro ride and the English-listed AED 30 intercity fare would spend AED 33–37.50 (about US$8.99–10.21) before the RAK last mile. That is arithmetic using published fare bands, not a confirmed through ticket. If the checkout fare differs, use the amount shown by RAKTA. Families should multiply the per-person transport legs before comparing them with a single vehicle fare.

Taking a taxi directly from DXB

The airport taxi is the easiest option to understand. At Terminals 1, 2 and 3, follow the official taxi signs to the staffed rank after arrivals and tell the driver your hotel name and exact map pin. Dubai Taxi Company says airport taxis can connect passengers to other emirates around the clock. Ask for the meter to run, keep the receipt and confirm the destination before leaving the rank.

DTC publishes an AED 20 (about US$5.45) normal-vehicle airport starting fare, AED 25 (about US$6.81) for a van, and AED 2.62 per kilometre (about US$0.71/km). It also lists possible Salik tolls, waiting at AED 0.50/minute (about US$0.14), and an AED 20 Sharjah crossing charge when applicable. Route, traffic, vehicle, waiting and the actual crossing determine the final bill. A quote presented as a universal DXB-to-RAK taxi fare would be misleading.

One transparent calculation shows the scale: 85 km × AED 2.62 + AED 20 = AED 242.70 (about US$66.09) before tolls, waiting or any applicable crossing charge. The 85 km is only a worked distance example, not the measured trip to your hotel; a resort may be farther away. Ask the driver or booking app for the route and a live estimate. If you need a van or child seat, arrange that before accepting a car at the rank.

Your destination in Ras Al Khaimah changes the answer

RAK city, Al Nakheel and nearby districts

If your hotel is near the city centre, the intercity bus is often worth considering. You still need to identify the bus-station-to-hotel leg; never assume “Ras Al Khaimah” on a booking page means the hotel entrance. Compare the local taxi cost and arrival hour with the saving on the long-distance leg.

Al Hamra and Al Marjan Island resorts

These stays call for a different calculation. You may save on the intercity seat but then pay for a long local taxi ride from South Al Dhait, possibly late at night. Ask the hotel for its airport transfer price and whether it can also collect guests at the RAK bus station. Some resort properties describe their own transfer arrangements; Visit Ras Al Khaimah’s Al Marjan Island page is a useful orientation point, but your reservation’s exact property and entrance are what matter.

With two or more paying passengers, compare the combined bus, metro and final taxi cost against one direct airport taxi or a fixed hotel transfer. For a solo traveler, the bus saving is usually much more compelling. For a group with large luggage and a resort address, the value of a direct ride rises even if its sticker price is higher.

Late flights, luggage and other practical decisions

A late arrival changes the public-transport calculation twice. You need the Dubai Metro running when you leave the terminal and enough time to reach Union before RAKTA’s listed 23:30 final departure. Landing at 22:00 does not guarantee either connection once immigration and bags are included. Check the day’s metro hours on Dubai Airports and the current RAKTA departure before buying into the bus plan. If the connection is tight, choose a direct taxi or an overnight Dubai stop rather than relying on the final bus.

Dubai Airports states a metro luggage allowance of two pieces per passenger, including hand baggage, with size limits on its guidance page. Oversized or awkward bags make the terminal-to-Union and station-to-hotel transfers harder even when they fit the policy. If you have mobility needs, a stroller, a wheelchair or a child seat requirement, arrange the exact vehicle and assistance with the transport provider or hotel in advance. A private transfer’s main advantage is certainty about that handover, provided the quote names the pickup terminal, waiting policy and drop-off address.

Do not book a bus ticket assuming it will carry you to Ras Al Khaimah International Airport (RKT). RKT and the city or resort zones are separate destinations. For a flight connection, establish the onward route and a generous buffer before purchasing; this article’s time allowances are for hotel travel.

How to choose and book without surprises

  1. Pin the exact destination. Save your hotel’s map link, district and entrance, not just “RAK.”
  2. Check the landing terminal and clock. T1/T3 have metro access; T2 needs another route to Union. Build in arrival formalities.
  3. Price the whole journey. For bus, add Dubai transport, intercity seat and RAK last mile for every traveler. For taxi, compare the live meter estimate or hotel’s written total.
  4. Verify the live bus fare. RAKTA’s English and Arabic pages disagree. Use Sayr or staff for the payable amount and current seat availability.
  5. Keep your receipt and pickup details. They matter if a taxi item is lost or the operator needs to trace a booking.

If you are also deciding where to stay before this trip, start with the wider hamintour travel guides. If your itinerary includes Dubai neighbourhoods first, our DXB to Deira, Downtown and Dubai Marina guide covers that separate city leg. Common questions

Is there a direct bus from a DXB terminal to Ras Al Khaimah?

The RAKTA intercity service described here departs from Dubai Union, not the airport terminal. From T1 or T3, ride the metro to Union; from T2, plan another way to Union. Check the operator before travel in case it adds or changes a service.

How much is the bus from Dubai to RAK?

RAKTA’s English Union–RAK page displays AED 30 (about US$8.17), while its Arabic page displays AED 20 (about US$5.45). Confirm the live fare with RAKTA or at purchase. Metro and the RAK hotel transfer are extra.

Where does the bus leave me in Ras Al Khaimah?

Plan for the main intercity station in the South Al Dhait area and check the exact stop on your booked service. Arrange local transport to your hotel, especially in Al Hamra or Al Marjan Island.

Can I get a taxi to RAK from DXB Terminal 2?

Yes. Dubai Taxi Company describes staffed airport taxi facilities at Terminals 1, 2 and 3 and inter-emirate journeys. Use the official rank and request your exact hotel destination.

Is a taxi fare fixed between DXB and RAK?

Do not expect one fixed fare for every hotel. DTC publishes a starting fare, distance rate and possible extras. A prebooked hotel or private transfer may quote a fixed total; get its inclusions in writing.

What if my flight lands after the last bus?

Take a direct licensed taxi, use a confirmed hotel transfer, or stay in Dubai and travel the next day. Check your actual arrival time against the metro and intercity schedules; the final listed Union departure is 23:30.

hamintour’s simple rule: decide using the address on your reservation, not a map label for the emirate. The bus is a strong budget option when Union is easy to reach and the last mile is short. A direct vehicle is the cleaner choice for a late arrival or a resort well outside the city.

Check before departure: RAKTA bus timetable and fare · Dubai Airports metro guidance · Dubai Taxi Company airport tariff · RAKTA local taxi tariff. Schedules and fares can change; use the operator’s booking or counter display for the amount you will actually pay.
