Weight Loss Surgery Hospitals and Surgeons in Iran: How to Compare Your Options

The right question is not simply who offers the lowest sleeve price. It is where the operation will take place, who will make the clinical decision, what the hospital can do if a complication occurs, and who will monitor your health after you return home. This guide compares ten Tehran hospitals and consultation practices, ten direct professional records, publicly sourced images and the parts of a bariatric trip that are easy to overlook.

Explore the Weight Loss in Iran treatment guide

General information only; eligibility and procedure choice require a licensed clinical team.
How we prepared this comparison. It draws on the experience of the hamintour Medical Tourism team and feedback received from patients, then checks what each provider publishes against primary hospital and physician sources and direct Iranian Medical Council records. This article is an information guide, not a paid advertorial. Public pages are not an independent audit of surgical outcomes, current hospital privileges or the quality of care for your specific case. We have not turned missing data into an invented score.

What makes a comparison useful?

A bariatric center should be evaluated as a complete care pathway. A surgeon’s name alone does not reveal the operating hospital, anesthesia plan, dietetic support, urgent imaging, intensive care access or arrangements after discharge. We gave priority to Tehran because the public sources provide a concentration of hospitals, specialist practices and international-patient services there. That geographic focus is practical, not a claim that all other Iranian cities offer inferior care.

The table records the type of facility, its own service statements and the question an overseas patient should ask next. Four entries are hospitals; the remaining six are consultation or follow-up practices. Calling an office a hospital would mislead someone planning surgery. We do not rank these providers by success rate, complication rate or patient satisfaction because comparable audited figures were not available. Every center has a direct provider link. We leave out map pins when an exact independently verified location could not be established.

Use the Iranian Medical Council member search to match a clinician’s name, registration number and listed qualification. A profile does not show the full scope of current hospital privileges. Ask the hospital to confirm in writing that the named surgeon is authorized there for the proposed operation. This matters especially for revision surgery and patients with significant heart, lung, liver or metabolic disease.

Some clinician offices publish patient photographs; most hospital pages do not publish five traceable before-and-after cases. We have not attached a surgeon’s image to a hospital merely because that surgeon may operate there. The original gallery is linked under each photograph in the image section.

Ten surgeons with direct Iranian Medical Council profiles

The table is a separate professional directory. It does not assert that each surgeon is employed by one of the hospitals above, accepts international patients, or performs a particular operation at the location shown. Medical Council data can change; reconfirm current practice location, registration and hospital privileges before scheduling.

Two important location discrepancies deserve attention: the published Tehran office of Ali Almasi and the Medical Council city in his record are different; Parsa Hospital names Mostafa Hojjati Lemraski, while his council record lists Shahriar. These facts do not prove a problem, but they are reasons to ask where the consultation and surgery would actually occur. For every proposed surgeon, request the exact procedure, hospital, anesthesia team and emergency contact in a written plan.

Who may be considered, and which procedure might fit?

Metabolic and bariatric surgery is a treatment for obesity and related disease, not simply a shortcut to a target clothing size. The ASMBS/IFSO indications recommend surgery at BMI 35 or higher irrespective of comorbidities and support consideration at lower BMI in selected circumstances. An individual surgeon must still examine the full picture: weight history, diabetes, reflux, sleep apnea, previous abdominal surgery, mental health, medications, pregnancy plans and capacity for long-term follow-up. A BMI figure in a marketing form is not a diagnosis.

Sleeve gastrectomy

A sleeve removes much of the stomach and does not bypass the intestine. Its simpler anatomy can appeal to some patients, but it is irreversible and may worsen reflux. The NIDDK procedure guide describes the structure and trade-offs. Ask how reflux or a hiatal hernia will be evaluated and whether the surgeon expects a sleeve to be suitable for you.

Gastric bypass and related procedures

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass creates a small stomach pouch and changes the food pathway through the intestine. It may be considered for some patients with reflux or diabetes, but nutritional deficiency, internal hernia and other complications require structured follow-up. One-anastomosis bypass and other variants should be explained by their exact name and anatomy, not simply sold as a “mini” operation. Ask the surgeon why that specific operation is preferred and how a problem would be managed after you leave Iran. See the ASMBS procedure descriptions.

Revision surgery and alternatives

Revising an earlier sleeve, band or bypass can involve adhesions, altered anatomy and different risks. Send the prior operative report, endoscopy and imaging if available. A clinic should not promise to choose a revision from photographs or BMI alone. Some people may reasonably explore supervised medication and nutrition care rather than immediate surgery. The suitable path depends on clinical assessment and the patient’s informed preference. NIDDK also describes non-surgical devices and limitations.

Questions that reveal whether the hospital can support you

Ask to compare two proposals using the same checklist. Start with the clinical team: the named surgeon, anesthesiologist, operating hospital, dietitian and person responsible after hours. Then ask about preoperative tests, evaluation of sleep apnea and reflux, blood-clot prevention, equipment sized for your body, access to imaging, endoscopy, blood bank and intensive care, and the pathway for a leak or bleeding. A facility’s general accreditation claim is not a substitute for a case-specific emergency plan.

The NIDDK side-effect guide lists bleeding, infection, leaks and blood clots among possible problems. Ask specifically how the hospital would identify and treat them. Request a discharge summary and operative report in a language your doctor at home can use.

USD prices: what a published number does and does not buy

The Iran figures below summarize publicly advertised international-patient offers, not observed Hamintour quotations, a national median or a guaranteed price at any of the ten listed facilities. We did not convert domestic prices in toman into international prices. Quotes can differ because of surgeon fee, instruments, anesthesia, hospital nights, tests, management of other conditions and follow-up. The treating team must review your records before issuing a useful individual estimate.

ProcedureIllustrative Iran USD rangeWhat the quote must clarify
Primary sleeve gastrectomyAbout $3,000–$5,500Stapling supplies, anesthesia, tests, hospital nights, surgeon and dietitian.
Gastric bypass or one-anastomosis bypassAbout $3,500–$6,500Exact operation, hospital stay, endoscopy if needed, supplements and follow-up.
Revision surgeryCase-specific quotationPrior anatomy, adhesions, investigation, complication risk and longer stay.

Approximate published offers; source names: AriaMedTour, MedPalTrip, Iran Health Agency, IRHTO and Mehr Hospital. These are commercial examples with different inclusions. Ask hamintour Medical Tourism for a current itemized USD quotation after provider review.

Selected public examples from nearby Türkiye, Europe and the United States

The comparison below uses primary sleeve examples where possible. These are individual public offers, not national averages. Iran’s advertised starting range can be lower than these selected offers, which may make it worth investigating. The overlapping Türkiye range, missing inclusions and travel costs mean no honest comparison can promise Iran is always the cheapest total route.

Country and public exampleIllustrative USD amountScope caution
Iran, international-patient marketing offersAbout $3,000–$5,500Scope varies; not a quote from a listed hospital.
Türkiye, hospital-group guidanceAbout $3,800–$7,000Guide range; confirm surgeon, hospital, extras and follow-up.
United Kingdom, private providerAbout $11,400£8,799 converted illustratively at £1 ≈ $1.30; provider-specific offer.
United States, Denver Health self-pay$11,337Published sleeve bundle; confirm eligibility and exclusions.

All prices approximate and subject to change. Source names: AriaMedTour, MedPalTrip, Iran Health Agency, IRHTO, Mehr Hospital, Acibadem International, Practice Plus Group and Denver Health. Currency conversion is illustrative, not a live rate. Package content, clinical eligibility and local taxes differ.

For a fair comparison, request separate lines for surgeon and anesthetist, operating room, instruments, laboratory and imaging, additional endoscopy, hospital accommodation, discharge medicines, vitamins, dietitian, postoperative appointments, a companion, hotel, transport and the cost of treating an unexpected complication. Do not assume a quote covers these if they are absent. Compare a Hamintour-coordinated written offer with another offer of the same clinical scope. We cannot promise the lowest price for every patient or every procedure.

Ask for a plan you can compare

Share your height, weight, major conditions, current medicines, previous abdominal surgery and likely travel window. We can organize a preliminary review and request an itemized provider quotation. The final operation, eligibility and price are determined by the licensed surgeon and hospital after assessment.

Before-and-after examples: useful questions, limited proof

The twenty hosted images below come from several published clinician galleries. They are examples selected by their source providers, not audited results or twenty distinct patients. Some photographs have embedded Persian captions or different camera angles. We have not translated embedded claims or treated a displayed weight as a verified medical record. Ask the source clinician about the operation, time between photographs, additional treatment and consent to use the case. Weight loss is gradual; an immediate postoperative photograph cannot establish a final result.

For more visual examples hosted by Hamintour, see the weight-loss before-and-after library and the general before-and-after collection. Those galleries also require critical reading of source, timing and procedure. A photograph does not tell you about diabetes control, nutritional status or the person’s long-term health.

Planning the trip, recovery and care after returning home

Before booking

Collect previous operative reports, recent blood results, a medication and allergy list, and details of diabetes, heart or lung disease, reflux and sleep apnea. Send them securely to the provider for preliminary review. Decide who at home will monitor blood tests and nutrition after surgery. Check your health insurance for overseas surgery and later complications, and compare the entire budget rather than the operating fee alone. Entry rules depend on nationality; use the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs e-visa portal and the relevant consulate.

After arriving in Tehran

Allow time for examination and any extra tests. A remote estimate may change when the surgeon reviews your anatomy and medical risks in person. Meet the clinician who will operate, ask why the recommended procedure suits you, and sign consent only after discussing reasonable alternatives and complications. Ask for the hospital name and exact address before going to surgery. A consultation office is not an inpatient operating facility.

After surgery

Follow the hospital’s diet stages, walking advice, prescribed medicines and warning-sign instructions. The NIDDK describes a progression from liquids to softer foods and later solid foods, directed by the care team. The ASMBS explains why supplements and continued follow-up are essential. Persistent severe abdominal pain, fever, rapid heartbeat, repeated vomiting, shortness of breath or leg swelling should prompt urgent clinical assessment, not a message to a travel coordinator.

Before flying home

Do not schedule return travel by a package’s minimum-stay promise. Ask the surgeon to set individual clearance criteria based on your operation and recovery. The CDC medical-tourism guidance warns that surgery and long journeys increase blood-clot risk and addresses post-abdominal-surgery air travel. Receive an operative report, discharge summary, medication list, diet and supplement plan, emergency contact, pathology if relevant, and a schedule for blood tests and appointments at home.

Safety and changing travel conditions

Travel conditions can change quickly. Read your own government’s current advisory rather than rely on a timeless statement that a destination is safe for every nationality. For example, the UK government Iran advice and the US State Department Iran advisory set out restrictions and risks for their citizens. Check insurance validity, airline availability, entry rules and the hospital’s ability to support a delayed departure before paying a nonrefundable deposit.

About hamintour Medical Tourism and what we coordinate

hamintour Medical Tourism is a medical-tourism coordination platform in Iran. We are not a hospital, clinic or treating surgical team. We do not diagnose obesity, choose an operation, prescribe medication or perform surgery. Those decisions belong to the licensed surgeon and facility, with the patient’s informed consent.

Our practical role can begin before travel. We help you organize records and questions, find relevant hospital and surgeon options, request a preliminary review by the appropriate specialist and coordinate consultation dates. We can help compare written treatment plans and price inclusions so that “package” means something concrete. On request we can arrange flight booking, accommodation suited to postoperative mobility, airport reception, transport to the hospital and tests, language assistance or a patient companion, and practical support during your stay. Imaging and laboratory work follow the treating team’s orders.

After you return, we can help route questions and records to the provider and facilitate follow-up communication. We cannot replace urgent local medical care or guarantee an outcome. Ask us for an itemized quotation showing the provider’s medical fee, our coordination services, optional travel services and exclusions. You are welcome to compare it with other written proposals. See the hamintour Medical Tourism platform, our medical magazine or the Weight Loss in Iran guide. For a first question, contact us on WhatsApp.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a ranking of the best bariatric surgeons in Iran?

No. It is a research shortlist built from public hospital pages, surgeon sites and direct Medical Council records. It does not compare audited outcomes, patient mix or complication rates.

Is sleeve or bypass better for me?

Neither operation is universally best. Reflux, diabetes, prior surgery, medication use, nutrition risk and your own preferences affect the decision. A bariatric surgeon and multidisciplinary team must assess you.

Are the doctors in the table employed by the ten centers above?

Only a direct hospital page or provider statement supports a specific association. The doctors table is a separate professional directory; do not assume employment or current privileges at any listed facility.

How much does gastric sleeve surgery in Iran cost?

The public international-patient offers used here suggest roughly US$3,000–5,500, but that is not a national median or a confirmed quotation for any center in this article. Ask for a current itemized offer after clinical review.

Can I fly home immediately after surgery?

No fixed timetable is safe for everyone. Recent abdominal surgery and long travel raise clot risk. Follow the operating surgeon’s clearance and current travel-medicine guidance before booking the return flight.

Will I need supplements and follow-up?

Yes. Long-term nutrition monitoring, prescribed supplements and clinical follow-up are core parts of bariatric care. The regimen depends on the procedure and your test results.

Do the photographs show guaranteed results?

No. The images are selected examples published by their source clinicians, with differences in timing, clothing and camera angle. They cannot predict your weight loss, health outcomes or complication risk.

What does hamintour Medical Tourism do?

It coordinates provider contact, preliminary review, travel logistics and communication after your return. It is not a hospital, surgical team or source of medical diagnosis.

Three useful starting points for a personal shortlist

These are research starting points, not a ranking by outcomes. The three have different public evidence, which lets you ask more focused questions.

  1. Parsa Hospital, Tehran: its dedicated bariatric department names procedures and two surgeons. Confirm which physician and ward would handle your case and the current international-patient process.
  2. Ebnesina Hospital, Tehran: its obesity clinic page explicitly lists sleeve and bypass. Ask for the individual operating team, anesthesia review and complication response.
  3. Dr Pedram Talebian’s practice, Tehran: its consultation page and published examples can start a discussion of procedure choice. Verify the separate operating hospital and long-term follow-up plan.

The best option for a particular traveler may be none of these after clinical review. Use the full treatment guide to assess eligibility, alternatives and recovery before making a deposit.
